I observed something in a cafe the other day.
There was not an established line of customers. There was me, walking into the queue to observe the guy who is in there just as the doors crack open, to buy treats and drinks for his entire office. I think he was trying to get 3 servings of sundry, baked items for each person or he was going to swing by and provide aid for a starving village. I realize this and find myself letting out an almost involuntary sigh, borne of a deep need for coffee and the realization that pricks are everywhere and this guy should be surreptitiously flung down a flight of stairs.
There was another large bearded bear of a man standing along side another man. The latter was portly and suffering from a caffeine depraved attitude issue.
I mention them standing next to each other, because as soon as the first man carted off his truck-load of pastries and coffee, the beardly man stepped forward to place his order. Before he could get a word out, our portly java-bean cleared his throat and said something like: “there’s a line.” To which beardly replied, ‘sorry man, please go ahead.’ Java-bean retorted with more volume than necessary, ‘I wouldn’t dream of it, you’re already ahead of me and your order must be more important.’
Beardly, with a puzzled look on his face responds, ‘Hey man, you can really go ahead, I didn’t mean to cut.’
‘No way…I don’t want a big guy like you kicking my ass because I mentioned that you cut in line.’
‘You don’t need to be a dick, I’m hardly going to kick your ass,’ turning to the barista, ‘Can I get a large coffee to go?’
The barista grabs a cup and gestures towards our portly hero.
‘Can I have a hot chocolate?’
Really bro?! You’re going to bow-up on someone, not stick to your guns and then when the time comes you order a hot chocolate?
I don’t understand. I think it stems from people not standing up for things often enough and when the time comes for them to take a stand, they’ve forgotten how to do it or they choose to fight a stupid fight that should never have been undertaken.
If you are going to stand up for something – stand up for it – almost offensively. Stand up for things to win. Play for keeps. That is all.
